A county-level city in the western part of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. It is located on the banks of the Aksu River in the northwest of the Tarim Basin. It is the seat of the Aksu District government office and has a permanent population of 507,700 (2015). Industries such as wool and felt manufacturing have developed, and cotton, mulberry, and rice cultivation in paddy fields opened by the Agricultural Reclamation Construction Corps after the founding of the People's Republic of China are thriving. Walnuts are a specialty product. Rock salt known as "crystal salt" and "ice salt" is also famous. Aksu Airport is located in the north of the city. During the Han dynasty, it belonged to the states of Gumo and Wensu, and was one of the bases on the Silk Road.
