A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. Its Japanese name is daisy (Hinagiku). Native to western Europe, it was introduced to Japan in the early Meiji period. It is often grown in flower beds and pots, but is an indispensable plant in spring flower beds, and is also called Enmeigiku (prolonged life chrysanthemum) because its flowers continue to bloom for a long time. The leaves grow at the base of the plant, are spatula-shaped or obovate, have a stalk, are 3 to 5 centimeters long, and are soft and hairy. In spring, flower stalks about 10 centimeters high emerge one after another from between the leaves, and bear a single flower head at the end. The flower head is a tubular flower with yellow centers and ray-shaped flowers around the edges. In addition to single flowers, many horticultural varieties have double flowers, and the flower diameter ranges from small, about 2 centimeters, to large, over 7 centimeters. The flower colors include red, pink, and white. It grows well in any type of fertile soil. It is relatively resistant to cold, but is vulnerable to summer heat and dryness, and plants often die during the summer, so it is propagated by sowing seeds every year. Seeds are sown in rows in boxes or seedbeds in August and September, and seedlings are planted in flower beds or small pots in October. Plants that survive the summer can be divided in the fall.
