The capital of Hebei Province, China. Formerly a small village, it developed rapidly with the opening of the railway. Currently, it is the junction of three railway lines: Jingguang (Beijing - Guangzhou), Shijiazhuang - Taiyuan, and Shide (Shijiazhuang - Dezhou). It is one of the centers of China's cotton spinning industry, with its background in a large cotton-growing region, and is also home to thriving industries such as steel, machinery, and chemicals. It is home to Hebei Normal University, and the Jing coal mine is located in the western suburbs.
