...The film was shot in a studio in Nice in the south of France, in an open set that recreated the streets of Paris in the mid-19th century (the set designs were by André Balsac and Alexandre Tronnell, who hid his name because he was Jewish). This is the masterpiece and best work of the screenplay by Jacques Prévert and directed by Marcel Carné, following Les Défenses (1937), Quai des Fogs (1938), The Sun Rises (1939), and Les Devils de Noites (1942). (The French films of the time, which were represented by the works of this duo, were called "poetic realism.") It is probably the best-known French film in the world. The film is divided into two parts, Part 1 "Boulevard du Crime" and Part 2 "The White Man." The main setting is the Boulevard du Temple (also known as "Boulevard du Crime") in Paris in the 1840s. Real people such as JG Debureau, known as the great founder who elevated pantomime to the level of performing art, F. Lemaitre, a famous Romantic theater actor, and Pierre-François Lasnaire, a notorious poet of crime, mingle with fictional characters such as the prostitute Garance and Nathalie, the daughter of the director of the Fenambule theater where Debureau was active, to create a turbulent story that unfolds a love story that is both real and fictional.

[Four pre-war masters and poetic realism]
Starting with the avant-garde documentary film About Nice (1930), he produced the scandalous short film La semester 2000 (1932), which was banned until after the war, and his only feature film, The Atalant (1934). In 1934, the promising young poet Jean Bigot, known as the "genius poet," died at the age of 29, and French cinema finally emerged from its "Dark Ages" and entered a new era. The "naturalistic" tendency in French films of the 1930s, which began with director Fedele's "The Foreign Legion" (1934), "Hôtel de la Mimosa" and "La City of Women" (both 1935), and also included works by Fedele's pupil Marcel Carné (1909-1996; "Jenny's House" 1936, "Quai de la Fog" 1938), Julien Duvivier ("Our Companion" and "Nostalgia" both 1936, "At the End of the Road" 1939), and Jean Renoir ("Grand Illusion" 1937, "The Beast-in-Man" 1938, "Rules of the Game" 1939), was termed "realism-poetic" by film historian Sadoul.
