Fair Deal

The general term for the domestic policies presented by President H. Truman in his Message to Congress in September 1945. Truman sought broader domestic reform than F. Roosevelt's New Deal and called on Congress to enact a series of welfare policies. As a result, the minimum wage was raised, public housing was established, and social security was expanded, but revisions to labor laws and the enactment of civil rights laws were blocked by conservatives in Congress.

1945年9月アメリカの H.トルーマン大統領が議会にあてた教書のなかで提示した国内政策の総称。トルーマンは F.ルーズベルトのニューディールよりも広範な内政上の改革を目指して，一連の福祉政策の立法化を議会に求めた。その結果，最低賃金の引上げ，公共住宅の制定，社会保障の拡充は達成されたが，労働法の改定や公民権法の制定などは議会の保守派にはばまれて実現しなかった。
