...The Communist Party was a small force, but the government and bourgeoisie, in an attempt to halt the progress of the revolution, linked all uprisings and general strikes to the name of Spartacus and severely suppressed them. In January 1919, Luxemburg Liebknecht was killed by the counter-revolutionary forces, and in March, Leo Jogiches (1867-1919) was killed, leaving the party without a capable leader. There were various currents within the party, including syndicalists, so the successor leader, Paul Levi (1883-1930), adopted a policy at the second party congress in October 1919 that focused on expanding the organization and eliminating opponents. Party membership was halved, but party unity was strengthened.
