A city in the northwest of Tottori Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1956. It occupies the northern half of Yumigahama Beach, with the city at its tip, and the Sakai Line runs through it from Yonago City. Since the mid-Edo period, it has prospered as an export port to Osaka with the development of westward shipping. It was designated an open port in 1899. It fell into disuse for a time after the San'in Main Line was completed in 1912, but was revived as a trading port for Manchuria and Korea, and after World War II it became a fishing port and a port for importing lumber. Since the late 1960s, it has developed as the center of the Nakaumi coastal industrial zone. In 1992, it became the number one city in Japan in terms of the amount of fish landed, mainly sardines, squid, and red snow crab, and the seafood processing industry is also thriving. It is also a tourist base for the Oki Islands and Shimane Peninsula. It is connected to Shimane Prefecture by the Sakai Suido Bridge and Nakaura Water Gate. Yonago Airport is located in the south. In 2005, Nakaumi was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. It covers an area of 29.02 km ² . 35,259 people (2010).

鳥取県北西部の市。1956年市制。弓ヶ浜の北半部を占め，その先端に市街があり，米子市から境線が通じる。江戸中期以降大坂への移出港として西廻海運の発達とともに繁栄。1899年開港場指定。1912年山陰本線全通後一時さびれたが，満鮮貿易港として復活し，第２次大戦後は漁港，木材輸入港。1960年代後半からは中海臨海工業地帯の中心として発展。1992年にはイワシ，イカ，ベニズワイガニを中心とした漁獲水揚量が全国一となり，水産加工業も盛ん。また隠岐諸島や島根半島の観光基地でもある。島根県とは境水道大橋，中浦水門で連絡。南部に米子空港がある。2005年に中海がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。29.02km²。３万5259人（2010）。
