Theodor Haecker

German thinker. Born in Eberbach near Heidelberg. In 1921, he converted to Catholicism under the influence of the British Cardinal Newman. Not only did he translate the works of Kierkegaard and Newman into German, but he also engaged in a wide range of critical activities through the Catholic literary and critical journal Hochland. His main work is Virgil, Father of the West (1931). He is also famous for his anti-Nazism books that influenced the Scholl siblings Hans Scholl (1918-1943) and Sophie Scholl (1921-1943), members of the resistance movement "The White Rose."

ドイツの思想家。ハイデルベルク近郊エーバーバッハ生まれ。1921年イギリスの枢機卿(すうききょう)ニューマンの影響を受けてカトリックに改宗。キルケゴールやニューマンの著作をドイツ語に翻訳しただけでなく、カトリック文芸評論誌『ホーホラント』に拠(よ)って多彩な評論活動を行った。主著は『西欧の父ウェルギリウス』（1931）。抵抗運動「白バラ」のハンスHans Scholl（1918―1943）と
ゾフィーSophie Scholl（1921―1943）のショル兄妹に感化を与えた反ナチズムの著書によっても有名である。
