An old city in the southwest of Kochi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the lower reaches of the Shimanto River and is mostly mountain forest. The city center is in the Nakamura Plain in the Nakasuji River basin. It developed after Ichijo Norifusa moved there in 1468 to escape the Onin War, and is called Little Kyoto. Agriculture is centered on rice, vegetables, and fruit cultivation. The mountainous areas produce timber and pulp materials. Green nori from the Shimanto River is a specialty. The Tosa Kuroshio Railway runs through the city. In April 2005, it merged with Nishitosa Village in Hata County to become a city, Shimanto City. 384.50 km2 . Population: 34,647 (2003). 高知県南西部の旧市。1954年市制。四万十(しまんと)川の下流域を占め,大部分は山林。中心市街は中筋川流域の中村平野にあり,1468年に一条教房が応仁の乱を避けて移住してから発達,小京都と呼ばれる。農業は米作のほか野菜,果樹などの栽培が中心。山地では用材,パルプ材などを産する。四万十川の青ノリを特産。土佐くろしお鉄道が通じる。2005年4月幡多郡西土佐村と合併し市制,四万十市となる。384.50km2。3万4647人(2003)。
