Simon Vouet

Simon Vouet

French painter. Born in Paris. He learned painting from his father Laurent. He was famous as a portrait painter from an early age, and visited London, Constantinople, and Venice in 1613. He moved to Rome the following year, where he stayed until 1627. He started out by painting Caravaggio-esque works (1624, a series for the church of San Lorenzo in Lucina in Rome), characterized by dramatic depictions with emphasis on contrasts between light and dark, but gradually he was influenced by Lanfranco and Gentileschi, who expressed subtle differences in light and dark with stable compositions. When he returned to France, he was immediately appointed chief court painter to Louis XIII, and he was known for allegorical, historical, and religious paintings. Because Poussin was located in Rome, he enjoyed great fame in France, and his studio produced many representative painters of the next generation, including Lebrun. His representative works include the decorative ceiling painting at the Hôtel Ségu in Paris and "The Death of Dido" (Louvre Museum).
