A magazine about manners and customs from the Meiji and Taisho periods. Published by Toyo-do. First published in February 1889, it ceased publication in March 1916. It had 478 issues in total. Including extra issues, the total number of issues was 517. Influenced by Western graphic magazines, it was a 46x format magazine that initially featured mainly lithographs, and later included photographic plates, and was the first in Japan to use the word "pictorial" in its name. The first issue was 28 pages and cost 10 sen. With the aim of "creating a basis for compiling a personal history through pictures," the editorial policy was to research the manners and customs of the Edo period, introduce local manners as passed down in various regions, and record popular manners at the time of publication, but at the time of its founding, the emphasis was on Edo research, reflecting the revivalist trend of the time.
