A monthly women's fashion and lifestyle magazine, also spelled "Vogue." First published in December 1892 in the United States as a magazine for high society, it was acquired in 1909 by Condé Nast (1873-1942), a lawyer turned publisher, and has since grown exponentially as a full-fledged fashion magazine. In addition to the American edition, there are also editions in France, the UK, Italy, Spain, and other countries. It marked an era with the help of Bogue photographers such as Richard Avedon, but after the 1950s, high fashion, centered on haute couture, began to decline, and as women began to advance into society, fashion magazines were forced to change to keep up with the times. The editorial staff of the magazine was also staffed by women who aimed to become career women, rather than the upper-class ladies who were training to be brides. A typical example of this was Grace Mirabella (1929-2021, editor-in-chief of Vogue from 1971 to 1988), who later became independent and founded her own magazine, Mirabella. In 1985, the appearance of the American version of Elle shook the fashion magazine world, and Vogue later sought to rejuvenate itself by changing its editor-in-chief and further revamping its layout. In Japan, the Japanese version of Vogue Nippon was launched in 1999 (Heisei 11) by Nikkei Conde Nast, a joint venture between Conde Nast and the Nihon Keizai Shimbun. There is also a men's version of Vogue in France and Italy. The average circulation of the domestic version is about 1.14 million copies (1999).
