Also known as erythropoietin. A peptide hormone synthesized in the kidneys and secreted into the blood, it has the activity of promoting hematopoiesis. Its synthesis and secretion are regulated by the oxygen concentration in the blood. It acts on erythroid colony-forming cells to promote their differentiation into red blood cells.
