Dharma-sūtra (English spelling)

Japanese: ダルマ･スートラ（英語表記）dharma‐sūtra

A type of text accompanying the Vedas, the holy texts of ancient Indian Brahmanism. It describes the rights and duties of each of the four classes (varnas) that make up Brahmanism society, as well as the norms of life. It is part of the Kalpa Sutra, one of the six Vedāṅga that were created as supplementary texts to the Vedas, and is translated as "Vedas." It is one of the earliest documents in India that discusses law, but it is not a code of law for practical purposes such as court cases, but rather a religious document created by various schools of thought that followed the Vedas as a complement to the Vedas.

古代インドのバラモン教の聖典ベーダに付随する文献群の一種。バラモン教社会を構成する4階級(バルナ)それぞれの権利や義務，および生活の規範などを記したもの。ベーダの補助文献として成立した6種のベーダーンガVedāṅgaの一つである《カルパ･スートラ》の一部分を構成し，〈律法経〉などと訳される。法について述べた文献としてはインドで最初期のものであるが，裁判などの実用的目的のための法典ではなく，ベーダを補完する文献の一つとして，ベーダを継承する諸学派によって作り出された宗教文献である。
