The paper industry is a group of industries that produce paper for daily life such as newsprint, printing paper, and tissue paper, paperboard for industrial packaging such as cardboard boxes, and pulp, the raw material for both. The United States accounts for more than one-third of the world's pulp production, and if Canada, which comes in second, is added, North America accounts for half of the world's production. Japan is in fourth place after China. Canada is the largest exporter, followed by the United States, Sweden, and Finland.

新聞用紙や印刷用紙，ティッシュペーパーといった生活関連需要を満たす洋紙と，段ボール箱などの産業用包装資材の原紙となる板紙，および両者の原料であるパルプを供給する工業をいう。パルプを原料として各種紙類を生産する産業を製紙業ないし製紙工業という。
［世界の概況］
　パルプ生産はアメリカが世界の1/3余りを占め，2位のカナダを加えると北アメリカで世界生産の半分を占める。日本は中国に次ぎ4位である。カナダが最大の輸出国で，ほかにアメリカ，スウェーデン，フィンランドが主要輸出国である。
