In premodern Islamic cities, merchants and craftsmen formed trade associations called tariqas, ta'fa, hilfas, san'a, sinf, and a'naf. However, these organizations were not exactly the same as the typical autonomous guilds found in medieval Europe, but were government-controlled organizations.
