Sato Satoro - Sato Satoro

Poet. Born in Ogawara-machi, Shibata-gun, Miyagi Prefecture, he moved to Hiragata-machi, Ibaraki Prefecture (now Kitaibaraki City) at a young age. In 1926 (Taisho 15), he moved to Tokyo and worked at Iwanami Shoten for a while. In the same year, he joined the magazine Araragi, and in the following year (Showa 2), he studied under Saito Mokichi. He established his position with his first collection of poems, Hodo (1940), and in May 1945, he launched the magazine Hodo. He advocated a "pure tanka theory" based on descriptive poetry. His collection of poems, Kaichou (1952, winner of the Yomiuri Literature Prize), was the fruit of this. After the maturation of Fuyuki (1966) and Katakage (1970), he switched to the ancient style of his later years in Kaito (1975) and Tengan (1979). He is a member of the Japan Art Academy and serves as a judge for the poetry contest and the Mainichi Shimbun poetry column.

歌人。宮城県柴田(しばた)郡大河原町に生まれ、幼時茨城県平潟町（現北茨城市）に移る。1926年（大正15）上京、一時岩波書店に勤めた。上京の年『アララギ』に入会、翌27年（昭和2）斎藤茂吉に師事した。第一歌集『歩道』（1940）によって地位を確立し、45年5月歌誌『歩道』を創刊。写生に立脚する「純粋短歌論」を主張した。歌集『帰潮』（1952。読売文学賞受賞）はその結実である。以後『冬木』（1966）、『形影』（1970）の円熟を経、『開冬(かいとう)』（1975）、『天眼(てんがん)』（1979）において蒼古(そうこ)たる晩年の歌風に転じた。歌会始選者、『毎日新聞』歌壇選者を務める。芸術院会員。
