A fish of the Salmonidae family. A landlocked form of sockeye salmon. It is native to Lake Akan in Hokkaido and Lake Chimikeppu in the upper reaches of the Abashiri River. In 1894, it was transplanted to Lake Shikotsu, where it is called Kapacheppo (a thin fish because it is flatter than Yamabe), and in 1908, it was given the name Himemasu by Moriwaki Ikumo of the Hokkaido Prefectural Government. It was transplanted from Lake Shikotsu to various parts of Japan, and the story of its transplant to Lake Towada by Wainai Sadayuki (1858-1922) is famous. The dorsal part of the body is gray-blue, the abdomen is silvery white, and during spawning season, both males and females show nuptial colors of green-brown and crimson only on the center of the side of the body.
