Philoponos (English spelling)

Japanese: フィロポノス（英語表記）Iōannēs Philoponos

He lived between the end of the 5th century and the second half of the 6th century. He was a disciple of Ammonius, the son of Hermeias, and a Christian (probably Monophysite) Neoplatonist. His works cover philosophy, literature, rhetoric, logic, theology, mathematics, and natural science, and he defended the theory of the origin of the universe in Genesis using his own knowledge of natural science, and wrote commentaries on Porphyry and Nicomachus, but his greatest work is his commentaries on the works of Aristotle. Of particular note is his commentary on Aristotle's Physics, in which, through his sharp criticism of Aristotle, he prophetically pointed the way to modern theory of motion at an exceptionally early date.
