The French word for the owner of a castle or the commander in charge of its garrison. It corresponds to the English word castellan and the German word Burggraf, but in medieval France, small territories centered around castles often formed independent fiefs (châtelnies), so the word chatelain often meant a standard feudal lord who exercised bloody jurisdiction over his fief.
