Phan Chu Trinh

1872‐1926
Vietnamese enlightened nationalist. Also known as Phan Chau Trinh. Born in Quang Nam Province in central Vietnam. After passing the civil service examination, he aspired to become a government official, but resigned from office after becoming disillusioned with the feudal nature of the Hue Imperial Court. From around 1905, he campaigned for the revival of Vietnam, mainly in the south, with Tran Quy Cap and Huynh Thuc Can. In 1906, he traveled to Japan and met Phan Boi Chau, where he criticized his uprising policy and parted ways with him. After returning to Vietnam, he sent a letter to Paul Bo, Governor-General of Indochina, proposing the overthrow of old habits in Vietnam with the cooperation of the French authorities.

ベトナムの啓蒙的民族運動家。ファン･チャウ･チンPhan Chau Trinhともいう。中部ベトナムのクアンナム省生れ。科挙及第後官途を志望したが，フエ朝廷の封建体質に絶望して下野し，1905年ごろからチャン･クイカップ，フイン･トゥク･カンらと南部を中心にベトナムの再起を遊説した。06年渡日してファン･ボイ･チャウと会い，その蜂起路線を批判して決別したといわれる。帰国後，インドシナ総督ポール･ボーに書簡を送り，フランス当局の協力によるベトナムの旧弊打破を提議した。
