...The winter buds are covered by two fused bud scales. (1) The red-eyed willow S. chaenomeloides Kimura (illustration) is unique in that the bud scales of the winter buds are fused only on the dorsal side, and overlap on the ventral side (all other Japanese willows have fused bud scales on both the dorsal and ventral sides). The young leaves are noticeably reddish, hence the name red-eyed willow.
