Obiza - Obiza

Japanese:
Obiza - Obiza
An association of obi merchants in the Middle Ages. The obi za is thought to have been established around 1488 (Chōkyō 2). According to the Kennaiki, in 1447 (Bun'an 4), the Tendai Zasu of Honjo, who had the right to collect taxes, prohibited Oyado weavers (who later became part of the Otoneri-za) from directly selling finished obi, and they were to wholesale to the obi dana or tonmaru, which shows a trend towards separating production and sales. Eventually, the obi dana and tonmaru involved in sales came together to form the obi za. In 1528 (Taei 8), the obi za received a hosho (letter of office) prohibiting the Otoneri-za from selling directly, and came to control not only the sales of obi but also the production of obi.
