...A male domestic yak is crossed with a female cow to produce a hybrid called a dzo, but the dzo is often used for work in relatively low altitudes and the yaks for work in high altitudes. In recent years, a hybrid has been produced by crossing a female cow with a British Highland beef breed, called a yakow, which is a meat breed suitable for raising in cold climates. As the number of domestic yaks has increased, the wild species has become extremely rare and there are concerns that they may become extinct.
