1836‐1904 French painter. Born in Grenoble. After receiving his first lessons in painting from his father, a portrait painter, he was inspired by Veronese, Van Dyck, and Watteau at the Louvre. He was also friends with the Impressionists, but maintained a traditional style and did not participate in Impressionist exhibitions. His most popular works at the time were his still lifes of flowers, which were highly praised not only in France but also in England, where he visited several times. Although he is also known as a portrait painter, works such as "Homage to Delacroix" (1864) and "Atelier at the Batignolles" (1870), which depicts Manet and his companions, are formally connected to 17th-century Dutch group portraits and show a moderate style.
