1545‐78 Spanish military commander. Born to King Charles I (Charles V) of Spain after the death of Queen Isabella, and a German woman, Barbara von Blomberg, he was raised in Spain from the age of five. After studying at the University of Alcalá with his half-brother, Prince Carlos, son of Philip II, he entered military life in 1568. At the end of that year, the Moriscos broke out in a violent rebellion in the mountains of Granada, which Juan achieved his first military feat three years later when he put down the rebellion. Then, in the autumn of 1571, he led a combined fleet of ships from Venice, Spain, the Papacy, and other nations, defeating the Turkish fleet at the Battle of Lepanto.
