Abbreviation for Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. One of the specialized agencies of the United Nations. Established in 1945 based on the Allied Food and Agriculture Conference during World War II, it took over the duties and assets of the Universal Agricultural Association, which was established in 1905. Its purpose is to improve food production and distribution around the world and to improve people's lives. Its highest organ is the General Assembly, which is made up of all member states, and the Council is made up of 49 countries elected by the General Assembly. Its headquarters are in Rome. Its member states are 175 nations and the EC (1998).
