Medically, it is called toxemia of pregnancy. It is a pregnancy-related disease that is often seen in the latter half of pregnancy (especially after the 20th week of pregnancy), and its exact cause remains unknown to this day. Although the lesions affect multiple organs, the condition often heals or improves quickly once the pregnancy ends. The three main symptoms of toxemia of pregnancy are edema, high blood pressure, and proteinuria, but eclampsia (sudden convulsive attacks that occur during pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium), which is characterized by severe neurological symptoms, is also included as a special type of the disease. Advances in diagnostic methods have led to the exclusion of various incidental pregnancy complications (pregnancies complicated by heart disease and diabetes) that were previously included in toxemia of pregnancy, and improvements in the management of pregnant women, so the incidence rate has now fallen to around 8-12% of total births (previously 10-30%).
