Intolerance - Intolerance (English spelling)

American film from 1916, directed by David Wark Griffiths. The film is about the history of human intolerance, and tells the story of four different time periods: the fall of ancient Babylon, the Passion of Christ, the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in medieval Paris, and the suffering of the unemployed in modern times. The distinctive feature of this film is the originality of its cinematic expression, which is first and foremost demonstrated in the way the story is structured. The four stories progress simultaneously, regardless of time. Then, like four small streams that become one great river and flow into the sea, the individual stories become intertwined and finally integrated into the great flow of the drama of humanity. The editing techniques that realize this intertwining and integration, especially the rapid cutbacks, are magnificent, and together with the filming techniques such as extreme close-ups, long shots, bird's-eye shots using a crane, and long-distance moving shots, it is a culmination of the unique expressive techniques of cinema, and has influenced Soviet and Japanese films as well as the whole world.

アメリカ映画。1916年作品。監督デビッド・ウォーク・グリフィス。人類の不寛容（イントレランス）の歴史を主題として、古代バビロンの崩壊、キリストの受難、中世パリのサン・バルテルミーの虐殺、現代の失業者の受苦、の四つの時代の物語を描く。この作品の特色は映画表現の独創性にあり、それはまず物語の構成法に発揮されている。四つの物語は時代に関係なく、同時に進行する。そして四つの小川が1本の大河となり、海に注ぎ込むように、それぞれの物語は錯綜(さくそう)し、ついに人類のドラマという大きな流れに統合される。この錯綜と統合を実現する編集技術、とくに急速なカット・バックはみごとで、極度のクローズ・アップやロング・ショット、クレーンを使った俯瞰(ふかん)撮影、あるいは長距離の移動撮影などの撮影技術とともに、映画独自の表現技術を集大成化したもので、ソビエト映画や日本映画をはじめ全世界に影響を及ぼした。
