Falsetto (English spelling) falsetto English

A vocal technique used in vocal music. A high voice used by male singers to expand the upper limit of their vocal range. In Japan, it is commonly called "falsetto". It was a particularly important vocal technique in 16th and 17th century England, and many singers made it their specialty. They were called male altos or counter tenors, and had the same vocal range as female altos. However, unlike castrati (male singers who were castrated to maintain the vocal range of their youth), they lacked vocal power, so today only tenors occasionally use this technique. In the world of popular music, male soul singers use this technique, and in the field of folk music, it is used in Swiss yodeling and the Japanese folk song "Hohai-bushi".
