A city in the western part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) in central Africa. It is a river port city located on the east bank of the Congo River (Zaire River) about 160 km upstream from its mouth. It has a population of 172,730 (1994). It is the country's main port, allowing ocean-going ships to enter, and serves as the outer port of the capital Kinshasa. The Congo River is not navigable upstream due to rapids, so a railway runs to Kinshasa. Coffee, cocoa, palm kernels, etc. are shipped from the port, and it also has refrigeration facilities and serves as a fishing port. Ango Ango downstream is an oil base, and a pipeline runs from here to Kinshasa. In 1983, the Matadi Bridge over the Congo River was completed with assistance from Japan.
