Urakami Shunkin

A Nanga painter of the late Edo period. His surname was Ki, given name was Sen, and his pen name was Hakukyo, and his pen names included Shunkin and Suian. He was born in Bizen (Okayama Prefecture) as the eldest son of Urakami Gyokudō. He received instruction in painting from his father from an early age, and travelled around the country following his father when he escaped from the Kamogata domain. At around the age of 32, he spent time in Nagasaki, and later based himself in Kyoto, traveling between Bizen and the area, interacting with Rai Sanyo and Tanomura Chikuden, and becoming famous in the world of Kyoto and Osaka literature and ink at the time. His paintings were completely different from those of his father, and he was known for his elegant and sophisticated style, and at the time he was more famous as an artist than his father. An example of his work is the "Flower and Bird Screen" (Tokyo National Museum). He was also skilled in Chinese poetry and prose, and wrote two volumes of "The Theory of Painting Poetry."

江戸後期の南画家。姓は紀,名は選,字は伯挙,号は春琴の他に睡庵など。浦上玉堂の長子として備前(岡山県)に生まれる。子供のころより父に絵の手ほどきを受け,父の鴨方藩脱藩に従って各地を遍歴。32歳ごろには長崎に遊び,のち京都を拠点に備前と往来,頼山陽や田能村竹田らと交流して当時の京坂文墨界に名を列ねた。画は父とは全く異なり,妍麗巧緻な画風で知られ,当時にあっては父よりも高い画名を得ていた。作例に「花鳥図屏風」(東京国立博物館蔵)がある。また,漢詩文もよくし『論画詩』2巻がある。
