Venetian glass

Glass art developed in Venice, Italy, and is characterized by its excellent craftsmanship and gorgeous decorativeness. Its history dates back to the 10th century, but in 1291, all glass artisans were concentrated on the island of Murano off the coast of Venice, and the island was given a strict protection policy, which allowed glass art to flourish. Since then, the glass art industry monopolized the European market until the 17th century. Products from the 14th to 16th centuries included enameled wine cups and tableware, and flat mirrors made using secret techniques. In the 17th century, the typical Venetian glass style was established with products such as lace glass with white line patterns resembling lace, and table glasses and chandeliers made of gorgeously colored and richly decorated glasswork.

イタリアのベネチアで発達展開してきたガラス工芸で，優れた技巧と華麗な装飾性にその特色がある。その歴史は10世紀にさかのぼるが，1291年にすべてのガラス工人を，ベネチア沖のムラノ島に集中移住させ，島外不出の掟と手厚い保護政策を加えることによって，本格的な発達を遂げ，それ以来17世紀ころまでヨーロッパ市場に独占的なガラス工芸品の供給を行ってきた。14～16世紀の製品は，エナメル彩色を施した酒杯やテーブル･ウェア，秘伝技術による平面鏡，17世紀にはレースのような白い線文様を表現したレース･グラスlace glassや華麗な色彩と装飾豊かなガラス細工によるテーブル･グラスやシャンデリアなどで典型的なベネチア･ガラスの様式を確立した。
