Falster (Island) (English spelling)

Japanese: ファルスター[島]（英語表記）Falster

An island in southern Denmark. Area: 514 km2, population: 43,977 (1975). Located south of Zealand across the Great Strait, it is a triangle jutting out to the south and is the southernmost point in Denmark. The topography is a moraine hill with a highest point of 44m, and the eastern coast is a sandy beach with many holiday homes. The soil is fertile and suitable for growing sugar beets, and grain production is also high. The main city is Nykoping, and ferries operate from the southernmost port of Gedser to Warnemunde and Travemunde in Germany.

デンマーク南部の島。面積514km2，人口4万3977(1975)。シェラン島の南に〈大海流海峡〉を隔てて位置し，南に突き出た三角形の形をなし，デンマーク最南の地である。地形はモレーン(氷堆石)丘陵を呈し，最高点は44mで，東岸は砂浜海岸で別荘地を形成している。土壌は肥沃でビート栽培に適し，穀物生産も高い。中心都市はニュケピングであり，最南のゲサーGedser港からはドイツのバルネミュンデ，トラーベミュンデへフェリーが就航している。
