This site is located on a river terrace in the middle reaches of the Kobuk River in northwestern Alaska. It was investigated by JL Giddings and DD Anderson and nine cultural layers were identified. To date, only the lowest layer, the Akmaq culture, has been reported in detail. This culture is characterized by microblades, microlithic cores (microlith tools), bifacial core stone tools, burins, knives, and arrow shaft grinders, and has been dated to approximately 15,000 to 8,500 years ago. It is an important site for understanding the cultural development in northwestern Alaska as well as being related to the migration of humans to the New World.
