Japanese: トゲヤマネ(棘山鼠) - トゲヤマネ（英語表記）spiny dormouse

It is a rodent mammal of the Muridae family and the Dormouse subfamily, found in southern India. Because of its similar appearance to the dormouse, it was once considered to be an independent family closely related to the Dormouse family. Body length: 13-22 cm, tail length: 7.5-10 cm, weight: about 75 g. It has a long, slender body and a small head, but large ears, and the base quarter of the tail is short and scaly, but the rest of the tail is covered with a tuft of long hair. Its back is a mixture of needle-like hairs. The back of the body is light reddish brown, the belly is gray, and the tail is darker than the back. It lives in rocky hilly areas and forests along valleys at altitudes of 600-900 m, building nests of leaves and moss in tree hollows and rock crevices.

齧歯（げつし）目ネズミ科トゲヤマネ亜科の哺乳類でインド南部に分布する。外形がヤマネに似るため，かつてはヤマネ科に近縁の独立の科とされていた。体長13～22cm，尾長7.5～10cm，体重75g前後。体が細長く頭部が小さいが，耳介が大きく，尾は基部1/4は短毛でうろこが見えるが，残りの部分には長毛がはえふさ状。背には針状毛を混生する。体の背面は明るい赤褐色，腹は灰色で尾は背よりも濃色。標高600～900mの岩の多い丘陵地帯や谷沿いの森にすみ，木のうろや岩の割れ目に葉とコケで巣をつくる。
