A town in Kurate County in northern Fukuoka Prefecture. It occupies the left bank of the midstream Onga River. The Chikuho Main Line runs through it. From the mid-Meiji period onwards, it became one of the major coal mining towns in the Chikuho coalfields, but due to a recession in the coal industry, all of the mines were closed. After that, promotion measures were implemented for industrial and housing development, and companies began to move into the town. 35.60 km2 . Population: 17,088 (2010). 福岡県北部,鞍手郡の町。遠賀(おんが)川中流の左岸を占める。筑豊本線が通じる。明治中期以後筑豊炭田有数の炭鉱町となったが,石炭産業の不況により炭鉱はすべて閉山。その後,工業,住宅開発などの振興策がとられ,企業進出が進んだ。35.60km2。1万7088人(2010)。
