〘noun〙① A person older than a young boy who has not yet undergone coming-of-age ceremony. A child around 10 years old. A boy. ※Man'yoshu (late 8th century) 18:4094 "Old men , women, and boys alike, all share my heart's desire." ※Genji (around 1001-14), Hazukiki "When I served as a boy, I listened to the stories told by ladies-in-waiting and felt very sad." ② Hair that is loose and hangs down like a child's hair. Boy -like hair. ※Man'yoshu (late 8th century) 16:3791 "Is it the intestines of the caterpillar that make my black hair hang down with a comb? I take it out and comb it , but when I give it back, it is messy and sad for a boy." ③ A boy or girl who is a servant. Also, a servant in the form of a boy. It is also used for people of a certain age. ※Man'yoshu (late 8th century) 16.3842 " You children, cut the grass, and let Hozumi no Ason cut the armpit grass ." ※Heike (early 13th century) 2 "The grass of Mudoji Hoshi and Joen Risshi is Tsurumaru ." ④ A title given to young girls in the Gosechi festival. ※Murasaki Shikibu Diary (around 1010) November 22, Kanko 5 "I thought the blue white oak sweatshirt of Tanba no Kami was beautiful. Warabe (child)

〘 noun 〙 (from the absence of the glottal stop "n" in "waranbe," a variation of "warawabe")① A child. Children. Children. ※Meigoki (1275) 2 "The children are called "children," "they are called "shimobe," "they are called "shimobe," and so on."② A child employed. Also, a man and woman in the form of a child employed. ※Genji (around 1001-14), Wakana no Shita "In particular, young people and children who are not supposed to be in the upper ranks, while those who are afraid are called "shimobe," etc."③ A word used to show humility toward one's wife. ※Okagami (before the 12th century) 1 "This is the child who will meet and lie to me later."[Additional notes]There are variant versions of "The Tale of Genji," which uses "warahabe" in the example given in (1)②, and there is a theory that "warabe" is not the form that was used when the work was created.

Wappa [child]

A word used by a boy to belittle himself. ※Kōwaka/Eboshiori (late Muromachi period - early modern period) "You should not behave like that, a wappa girl should behave like that." 3. A word used to insult a man. ※Jōruri/Kanpachishu Tsunagiuma (1724) 4 "The sound of a fearless wappa is a sight to behold." 4. A young servant. A young manservant. ※Amakusahon Heike (1592) 4 "Notodono vappa (wappa) Kikuwauto Yuumono"

わらべ【童】

〘名〙 (「わらわべ」の変化した「わらんべ」の撥音「ん」の無表記から)① 子ども。子どもら。児童。※名語記(1275)二「童部をば、わらべ、下部をば、しもべなど、よめり」② 召し使う子ども。また、召し使う童姿の男女。※源氏(1001‐14頃)若菜下「ことに上らふにはあらぬわかき人、わらべなど、おのかじしものぬひけさうなどしつつ」③ 自分の妻をへりくだっていう語。※大鏡(12C前)一「これはそののちあひそひてはべるわらべなり」[補注](1)②の挙例の「源氏物語」は「わらはべ」とする異本もあり、「わらべ」は作品成立時の語形ではないとする説がある。
(2)「日葡辞書」には、「Varabe(ワラベ)、または、ワランベ」とのせて、いずれも子どもの意とする。

わっぱ【童】

〘名〙 (「わらわ(童)」の変化した語)① 子どもをののしっていう語。また一般に、子どものこと。※曾我物語(南北朝頃)八「あのわっぱめを弟とおぼしめされ」② 男子が、自分のことを卑下していう語。※幸若・烏帽子折(室町末‐近世初)「御身のなむもあるまじき、わっぱがとがものがるべし」③ 男をののしっていう語。※浄瑠璃・関八州繋馬(1724)四「音に聞く不敵のわっぱよな」④ 年少の奉公人。年若い下僕。※天草本平家(1592)四「ノトドノノ vappa(ワッパ) キクワウト ユウモノ」
