...General term for crocodiles belonging to the family Crocodylidae, class of reptiles, including large, aggressive species. They are found in freshwater lakes and rivers in central and southern Africa, India, tropical Asia, New Guinea, northern Australia, and tropical America, and some species can live in saltwater and are found in the Melanesian islands. Five genera are included. The pygmy crocodile Osteolaemus tetraspis , considered to be a primitive crocodile found in West Africa, is small and docile, measuring less than 2m in length, but all others are large and aggressive.
