A title given to the king of ancient Egypt. It is the Hebrew (later Greek) form of Egyptian per-`O (per-ao). Originally it meant "Great House" or the king's palace. From the 18th Dynasty (1567-1320 BC), it came to be used as a title for the king, and from the 22nd Dynasty (c. 945-c. 715 BC), this title was used in conjunction with the king's name, for example, "Pharaoh Neco". However, the titles given to the king included the Horus name, the Nebty name, the Son of the Sun name, the King's name of Upper and Lower Egypt, and the Golden Horus name. The pharaoh wore a unique headgear called the white crown of Upper Egypt, the red crown of Lower Egypt, the double crown that combined the two, the blue crown, and the nemeth, and held a scepter symbolizing Upper and Lower Egypt.
