Portuguese romantic novelist. Renowned as a prolific writer. Lost his parents at a young age and raised by his aunt and sister, he committed suicide by shooting himself with a pistol at the end of his turbulent life, fearing he would go blind. Knowledge of his life is essential to understanding the basic characteristics of his work. His novels are mainly set in northern Portugal, and even modern readers can vividly feel the breath of the people living there. His most famous work, La mort de las escapades (1862), was written as a result of his imprisonment for a woman's affair, and marks the peak of his career as a popular writer.

ポルトガルのロマン主義小説家。多作家として名高い。幼くして両親を失い，叔母や姉の家で育てられ，波乱の生涯の最後には失明の不安からピストル自殺した。彼の作品の基本的特質を理解するには，彼の生涯に関する知識がきわめて重要である。小説の舞台は主としてポルトガル北部で，そこに生きる人びとの息づかいが現代の読者にも生き生きと感じられる。代表作《破滅の恋》(1862)は女性関係が原因の投獄事件の結果生まれたもので，大衆作家としての頂点を示すものである。
