Shosei Shibai (Cursive Play)
〘 noun 〙 A new type of theater that was created in the Meiji era by the young intellectual class known as soshi or shosei to appeal to the masses for their ideas of freedom and civil rights. It was the predecessor of Shinpa theater. Soshi-shibai (Soshi plays). ※Kokumin Shimbun - September 12, 1890 (Meiji 23) "When I opened the window, I saw a procession of high-pitched shosei plays by the river."
