German novelist. His real name was Rudolf Ditzen. He became an instant best-seller with his novel, "What Will You Do, O Poor Folk?" (1932), which portrayed the homelessness of ordinary people in the final days of the Weimar Republic. He remained in Germany during the Nazi era, and published a succession of excellent works that expressed a passive resistance attitude, such as "Once I Have Tasted Bad Food" (1934) and "Wolf Among Wolves" (1937). However, he eventually became an alcoholic and was sent to a reformatory. After the war, he completed "Everybody Dies Alone" (1947), just before his death, and it movingly depicts a lonely resistance to Nazi rule and its failure.
