A river in the southwest of the Russian Plain. It originates in the Central Russian Highlands, flows south, and connects with the Volga River via the Volga-Don Canal, and empties into the Taganrog Bay of the Sea of Azov via the artificial Lake Tsimlyansk. It is called the "Quiet Don" because the flow of the river is very gentle from the middle to lower reaches. It is navigable by steamship up to 1,600 km from the mouth of the river.
