Tenzing Norgay
Born May 15, 1914 in Tsechu, Tibet.
[Died] May 9, 1986. Darjeeling, India. Nepalese Sherpa. His real name was Namgyal Wangdi. He was said to have been born in Thame, Solo-Khumbu region, Nepal. He went to Darjeeling, India as a teenager to work, and married a Sherpa girl at age 19. In 1935, he was hired as a high-altitude porter by the British Everest expedition led by Eric Shipton, and became the first to climb the Himalayas (→ Himalayas). After World War II, he served as a head Sherpa (sardar). In 1952, he participated as a sardar in two Swiss Everest expeditions, coming close to the summit. In 1953, he participated as a sardar in the British Everest expedition, and on May 29 of the same year, he became the first to summit the world's highest mountain with Sir Edmund Hillary. After the first successful ascent, he was widely respected as a hero in both Nepal and India, and was appointed principal of the Nehru Mountaineering School in Darjeeling. He was also awarded the British George Medal.

ネパールのシェルパ。本名 Namgyal Wangdi。ネパールのソロ・クーンブ地方のターメ生まれともいわれる。10代でインドのダージリンへ出稼ぎに行き,19歳でシェルパ族の娘と結婚。1935年にエリック・シプトン率いるイギリスのエベレスト調査隊に高所ポーターとして雇われ,初のヒマラヤ登山(→ヒマラヤ山脈)を果たした。第2次世界大戦後,シェルパ頭(サーダー)を務める。1952年にスイスのエベレスト登山隊の 2回の登攀にサーダーとして参加,頂上直下まで迫った。1953年,イギリスのエベレスト登山隊にサーダーとして参加,同年 5月29日にエドモンド・ヒラリーとともに世界最高峰の初登頂に成功した。初登頂成功後はネパール,インド両国の英雄として広く尊敬を集め,ダージリンに設立されたネルー登山学校の校長職に任ぜられた。イギリスのジョージ・メダルを受章。
