A wave disturbance that exists in the atmosphere. A disturbance is a disturbance from a steady state. Disturbances exist on various scales in time and space, and the steady state referred to here is a flow that is on a larger scale in time and space than the disturbance of interest. Wave disturbances with different characteristics exist in the mid-latitudes and tropics. Here we will discuss mid-latitude disturbances. Mid-latitude disturbances are classified by horizontal scale, and the main characteristics of each are shown in the table.

大気中に存在する波動じょう乱のこと。じょう乱とは定常状態からの乱れを指す。じょう乱には，時間および空間についていろいろなスケールのものがあり，ここでいう定常状態とは，注目するじょう乱より時間的にも空間的にもスケールの大きな流れのことである。中緯度と熱帯では，それぞれ異なった特徴をもつ波動じょう乱が存在する。ここでは中緯度のじょう乱について述べる。水平スケールによって中緯度じょう乱を分類し，それぞれについておもな特徴を表に示した。
