Ammókhostos in Greek, Magusa in Turkish. A city on the eastern coast of Cyprus, and the administrative center of the district of the same name. Facing Famagusta Bay, it is the deepest port in Cyprus. It is a distribution center for the abundant agricultural products in the area, and commercial activities are thriving. Cotton spinning, brandy production, soap production, metalworking, and other industries are also carried out. There are many ruins in the area, including the Tower of Othello, the 14th century Old Cathedral of St. Nicholas (now a mosque), and the Venetian Royal Palace, which attract many tourists. A modern urban area developed in the southern part of the city under British rule from 1878 to 1960. It is connected to Nicosia, about 60 km to the west, by a highway. About one third of the residents are of Turkish descent, and it is part of the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus". Population 23,000 (1987 estimate).
