450-527 Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 518-527. Born a Macedonian peasant, he joined the Praetorian Guard in Constantinople and was later promoted to its commander. After the death of Emperor Anastasios, he was recommended for the throne despite being old and uneducated, as there were no other suitable candidates. He also established relations with the Kingdom of Aksum in Abyssinia (Ethiopia), but the greatest achievement of his nine-year reign was the establishment of orthodoxy. He corrected the heretical tendencies of his predecessor (Monophysiteism) and began persecuting heretics. He reconciled with Pope Hormisdas, putting an end to the break with the Roman Church (the Akacian Schism) that had begun with Emperor Zeno's Henoticon (Edict of Unity) (519).
