Farmers' Alliance

Japanese: ファーマーズ･アライアンス（英語表記）Farmers’ Alliance

A general term for farmer groups that gained influence in the Midwest and South of the United States in the 1880s. It can be translated as "Farmer Unions." There were the Northern Alliance, made up of Midwestern farmers; the Southern Alliance, based in the southern states and the western Great Plains states such as Kansas and the Dakotas; and the Colored Alliance, made up of black farmers in the South. They sought to provide relief to farmers suffering from the rural depression through large-scale cooperative activities, and were active in making innovative political statements such as opposing monopolies, and became the basis for the third political party, the Populist Party, in the 1890s.

1880年代にアメリカの中西部と南部で大きな勢力を得た農民団体の総称。農民連合(連盟)と訳される。中西部農民による北部アライアンス，南部諸州およびカンザス，ダコタなど西部大平原諸州を地盤とする南部アライアンス，そして南部の黒人農民のカラード･アライアンスがあった。大がかりな協同組合活動で農村不況に苦しむ農民の救済をはかるとともに，独占企業反対など革新的な政治的発言を活発に行い，1890年代の第三政党ポピュリスト党(人民党)の母体となった。
