Poor white people in the American South. Originally, it referred to people who lived in the lowest class of society other than slaves before the Civil War. After the South lost the Civil War, it was economically dominated by Northern capitalism for a long time, and became a poor area of America, and poor whites did not disappear easily. They were poorly educated and sometimes illiterate, so the derogatory term "redneck" was even coined. アメリカ南部の貧困な白人。元来は,南北戦争以前に,奴隷以外では最下層の生活をしていた人たちをいう。南北戦争で敗北した南部はその後も長く経済的に北部資本主義の支配を受けることになったので,アメリカのなかの貧困地帯となり,プーア・ホワイトはなかなか消滅しなかった。教育も低く,ときには無学文盲のこともあり,レッドネックredneckという蔑称さえ生まれた。農村地帯や奥地の荒廃した土地に住み,南部の後進性を示す象徴的な存在といわれた。
